At The Rackham, we teach French as a Modern Foreign Language to all pupils in Key Stage 2, supported by the resources provided by the Language Angels online platform.

French is taught by class teachers, who work together, supported by the Language Angels scheme of work, to ensure continuity and progression throughout Key Stage 2. Lessons are presented in a fun and active way using games, songs, video clips and presentations. The children have lots of opportunities to develop their conversational skills and to build up their ability to write increasingly longer pieces of writing in French using the correct grammar.

Across Key Stage 2, lessons progress in a clear sequence that help children develop and demonstrate substantial progress in the 5 key language skills necessary for learning any foreign language:

  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Grammar

By the end of Year 6, firm foundations are set for further language study at secondary school. Our goal is for children to be passionate, curious and confident about their own foreign language learning abilities when they finish the primary school phase of their education.

We believe learning a foreign language supports general language and literacy development and complements other aspects of the curriculum. It also helps to strengthen children’s sense of identity through learning about the culture in another country and comparing it with their own.
